Brian Jonestown Massacre - Methodrone

1x***** 6x****
Not the strongest of BJM, but an under-appreciated album full of memorable however derivative songs. "Evergreen" is an unassuming start, a more-sloppy Yo La Tengo. "Wisdom" is a great song that was better re-recorded on Strung Out In Heaven. "Crushed"**** is more derivative of Sonic Youth, but a decent imitation. "That Girl Suicide"***** is the first instance of the 60's psychedelic pop sound that would be perfected on later albums, as well as some shoegazer, and is catchy as hell. "Wasted" is buzzing with the noise of grunge. "Everyone Says" motors along again as Yo La Tengo, but with a lame chorus and not much else. "Short Wave"**** is another sloppy 60's/grunge with sliding, squawking lead guitar very prominent.
"She Made Me"**** is again similar to "Wisdom", with an interesting My Bloody Valentine verse progression. "Hyperventilation" is closer to Stone Roses as played by Jesus & Mary Chain. The album lags a bit with 3 atmospheric noise experiments, and the quiet but tuneless "I Love You". "She's Gone"**** begins the closing trifecta with another droning trip, with the addition of hurdy gurdy or similar instrument. The bonus track "In India You"**** slowly builds from acoustic to an ensemble of noise and distortion over an interesting and melancholy progression and melody. The closing untitled track**** is straightforward Indian style, as played by the Beatles, with a familiar but catchy melody.
