Black Mountain - In The Future

1x***** 2x****
Combining familiar elements sums up the construction of all the songs, starting with "Stormy High", which at the beginning sounds exactly like Wolfmother without the Robert Plant soundalike vocals, but adds parts reminiscent of Deep Purple, UFO, all around a big stoner rock riff. "Angels" is unexpectedly southern, kind of a shoegazer Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Tyrants" begins with a galloping early Sabbath riff, but slows down significantly to a goth middle section, leading to its prog/stoner conclusion. There is a spacial depth to the final build that is interesting, but ultimately the effort went into the half-dozen different parts, rather than making each of them interesting. "Wucan"**** is anchored by a creeping, climbing spidery riff, paired with a similar vocal melody in the verses. "Queens Will Play" again combines a Deep Purple galloping riff, gothically heavily reverbed vocals, and keyboards. "Evil Ways"**** one of the few fast songs is dueling guitar and keyboard, with goth vocals over the Bo Diddley beat. The "Bright Lights"***** suite takes about 4:10 to get past the overly goth/prog intro before this guitar keyboard pairing induces headbanging or fist pumping (the ***** part) until about 7:00 which starts some slowing building psychedelia. "Wild Wind" is very close to David Bowie, while the remaining couple songs are slow.
