Neil Young - Sleeps With Angels

2x****
Sleeps With Angels was a strange, somber listen, bookended by quick ditties with tack piano and disney melodies. "Prime Of Life" is like a subdued version of Ragged Glory with some pan flute added in to make it more elegiacal I suppose. The memorial title song is a slab of extremely distorted guitar, "Tonight's The Night" but without the blues and heavy on the toms, which while sounding interesting, is not much of a song. "Western Hero" and "Train Of Love" are displaced songs from Harvest Moon. "Change Your Mind" is fairly typical NY/Crazy Horse fare, but with a poppy chorus that doesn't fit with the verses, and far too long at almost 15 minutes. "Blue Eden"**** is some slow, anxious blues, sonically similar to "Bullet The Blue Sky". Several other songs are mellow eulogies. The most promising sign of life is the rather silly punk song "Piece Of Crap"****, that while simplistic (60% of the song is an A chord), is an amusing rant against consumerism (they cut the forest down to build a piece of crap). Not really stretching any artistic boundaries here, but it's fun enough.

I've always had a soft spot for "Piece of Crap".
