Califone - Heron King Blues

One type of songs on this album is traditional with very sparse and highly accented instrumentation, of which the opening "Wingbone" is a good example, where the arrangement allows for a raw, immediate sound. The other extreme is a the combination of loops and subtle instrumentation, which doesn't help "Trick Bird" as it's pretty tuneless. "Apple" is even more a collection of layered snippets of disjointed acoustic instrumental lines over a steady bongo/conga percussion track; like Talking Heads covered by Tom Waits' backing band. And speaking of Talking Heads, "2 Sisters Drunk On Each Other" makes the comparison unavoidable. The title song is mostly guitar noise from a buzzy, detuned-sounding guitar. "Lion And Bee" is similar to "Wingbone" with a cool bending riff as a hook but not much else. Each type of song is interesting, but not as enjoyable to listen to.
