The Magnetic Fields - Distortion

8x****
Though the sonic formula here is very constant from song to song: vocals, very distorted droning guitars, snare-heavy drums, and some occasional piano, all reverbed at levels ranging from heavy to totally saturated, most are thoroughly satisfying songs, with the rest being merely good. "Three Way"****, the opening instrumental, is based around a pair of garagey riffs. "California Girls"**** has tongue engaged firmly in a raspberry at those chicks the media idealized everywhere. "Xavier Says"**** is simple song, but a lovely change from verse to chorus. "Mr. Mistletoe" is an amusing mope. "Drive On Driver"**** is another great tune, and "Too Drunk To Dream"**** probably the silliest song, blitzed, shitfaced, anything better than the blues. "Till the Bitter End"**** has melodic feel of something from Fiddler on The Roof. "Zombie Boy"**** sounds a bit 80's Goth, starting with the Michael Jackson worthy bass line, with the drums pared are down so the song seems to float in parts, all with a chuckle. "Courtesans"**** is bit buried in instrumental insect chirps, but is a beautiful soother - nighty night.
