John Cale - Hobosapiens

2x****
Hobosapiens may not be the best album for me to review, as it's a bit too straightforward sign-songwriter in electronic style. This is especially the case with opening "Zen", a bit too simplistic, with a familiar late 60's melody. "Reading My Mind" is much more of an 80's pop song. "Things" is especially conforming to the singer-songwriter format, and would be perfect on XRT. "Look Horizon" and "Magritte" on the other hand have more classical elements and more surprises, like middle-album Bjork. "Bicycle" is has a dance beat and a prominent bass line, almost like Air. "Twilight Zone"**** has some menace to it, with elements of XTC and Peter Gabriel, with good choruses. The closing "Set Me Free" is more XRT fodder. The rest is less remarkable, especially "Things X", a deliberately un-musical reinterpretation of "Things" - except for the beautiful piano-driven "Over Her Head", whose choruses build nicely (there is a similar line in an Antony and the Johnsons song).
