Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink

2x****
An intersting prog album, that I'd compare with Tull (the early jazzy non-Ren-fair Tull without the tights and outrageous crazed-minstrel persona), Who (at least Tommy), early Genesis, and maybe Traffic as most of the solos are on keyboard. "Golf Girl" has an obvious introductory feeling ala Tommy and is the most poppy song of the record. "Winter Wine"**** has much more Tull, with the first extended keyboard solos. Did I say "Golf Girl" was the most poppy? Scratch that - this is total 60's British pop, like Small Faces. The title song is similar in feel to "Golf Girl". The 23-minute mostly-instrumental epic "Nine Feet Underground", does have some good solos and melodies throughout, but is probably only reaches its true potential while the listener is high (High during a 23-minute jam? No!). The remaining songs were apparently reissue bonuses. "I Don't Know It's Name" reminds me most of the early-Genesis. "Aristocracy" is the most Yes-sounding song here, on the few short songs Yes made. "It's Likely To Have A Name Next Week" is a less focused "Winter Wine". "Group Girl" is another version of "Golf Girl". "Dissociation/100% Proof"**** is the last two parts of "Nine Feet Underground".
