The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse

5x****
Starting like a ballad off of Pet Sounds, "Disaster"**** creeps up on you until strings and a flute fight with distorted guitars and big rock drums in a way that shows how all other hard rock with orchestra experiments just don't work. "For Agent 13" is more subdued (until the end), with divergent interludes. "And You Lied To Me" is pretty close to Pink Floyd on The Wall, until an anthemic ending with a nice arpeggiated riff. "Devastation"**** on the other hand has no qualms with coming in with the big guns and huge riffs. "Because Tonight"**** takes almost 4 minutes to really start, but some soaring vocals make it up for it. "Rides The Rails"**** returns to a Pet Sounds feel and more big rock. The harmonized vocals with heavy reverb add to the 60's production of the album. "On Bedford And Grand" is the strangest song with odd chord changes and chant-y harmonies, but the choruses are as straightforward as the verses are strange. "Cedric's War"**** is again a bit of English / Phil Spector , and in the end the descending, hopping bass line leads you off into the sun.
