Faith No More - The Real Thing

1x***** 2x****
The Real Thing shows promise with "From Out Of Nowhere"**** with keyboards dueling with Jim Martin's guitar. Any gen-xer would take having heard "Epic" for granted, but it's completely unmelodic and now it sounds dated and boring, except for the bridge and the sweet piano ending (cue the fish). "Falling To Pieces" has similar guitar - keyboard interplay as first song, but not as successfully - resembling the less direct direction of the next album. "Surpirse! You're Dead"***** lives up to its name with one insane riff, no tune whatsoever, and time-changes all over the place. "Zombie Eaters" is a heavier version of Dream Theater. The title song attempts some drama, where big guitars jump in mid-verse out a quiet keyboard parts - the tension! "Woodpecker From Mars" is an instrumental with keyboards like Arabian snake charmers in cartoons. "War Pigs"**** is a nearly note-for-note cover, which I like mostly out nostalgia and for its energy. Where "Edge Of The World" fits in I'm not sure, kinda cabaret-style.
