Edan - Beauty And The Beat

1x****
My impression is of slightly psychedelic hip-hop, similar to De La Soul. Starts off happy enough with "Polite Meeting" with its bouncy super mario brothers-y riff. "Funky Voltron" moves to um, funk, 70's soundtrack-style. The enjoyment of the album gets a bit rocky with the disjointed "I See Colors", with the very soft 60's chorus, and another sample sounding like it's coming out of a passing car. Next, "Fumbling Over The Words That Rhyme" definitely has a hook, but it gets old fast, except for the way it's manipulated at the end. "Murder Mystery" definitely has a feel with the muted trumpet, but you get the idea pretty fast. "Torture Chamber" goes back to straightforward hip-hop, with some amusing fake? screaming. Later, "Rock And Roll"**** brings the um, rock, with a riff very reminiscent of "Ogden's Nut Gone" by Small Faces, which, since I guess am prejudiced, is my favorite. "The Science of Two" has an 80's rap sound. "Smile" seems based on Radiohead's "Pull/Pulk..Doors", with the heavily reverb-ed guitar ringing in the background throughout. "Promised Land" ends with kind of a mish-mash of a 70's big anthem and some retro-space-documentary music. Overall the songs of the album have an interesting sound, but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out.
