The Clash - Give Em Enough Rope

4x****
One can tell right away this is departure from the first album, from the cleaner sound and studio production to the way they sound like they practiced their instruments a bit. "Safe European Home"**** and "Tommy Gun"**** start off the first side with catchy pop songs, marred by the dreadful, painfully corny "English Civil War" sung to Johnny Comes Marching Home (or some Anglo equivalent) in between. "Julie's On the Drug Squad" is even more pop friendly, 50's style, resembling some of the less interesting songs on London Calling. "Last Gang In Town" is a bit more of a cleaned version of a song from the first album, but relatively draggy. Side two improves with "Guns On the Roof"****, the location to best be shouting from, and a party, scheduled for "Drug Stabbing Time"****. The last three tracks are pleasant enough but leave the impression of the sophomore slump.
