The Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil

3x****
Most songs are suggestive of garage-rock, straight out of Nuggets. "I Saw A Ghost" starts relatively sparse, but is followed up by tom-heavy "O Katrina"****, which will inspire head-banging. "Lock And Key" is reminicent of some haunting variety of New York punk, but I can't place who. "Navajo" is more retro than most, almost a coyboy-Western music. "How Do You Tell A Child That Someone Has Died" goes even further into a slow country waltz which may be funnier with the earnest spoken verses. "Bad Kids" could be from 60's kids show; or maybe Grease. "Step Right Up" goes straight for Velvet Underground via "Run Run Run" but with a few more chords. "Slime And Oxygen"**** is in a similar vein, with its galloping drums and spidery guitar solos. "Cold Hands"**** is another good 60's pop tune. "Off the Block" is average psychedelic pop. The album ends with average straightforward pop in "Transcendental Light".
